Interesting turn in the Garand project

Print This Post

So in the midst of a long-running project of three M1 Garands, chronologically toward the end of it, comes the announcement from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) that they would be releasing in five days a lot of previously rare M1 bayonets.

Wow!  Shift gears pronto!  That was last week.

Beautiful American Indian photography

Print This Post

Over at Kickin’ and Screamin’ there is a link and sample of some great photography of the American Indian.

Take a look at the samples and follow the link to even more.  And two of those samples are my favorites after reviewing those at the source.  Just beautiful — would love to have them on the wall.

Just wanted to give you some thoughts along with saying I’m sooo glad you’re still in there.  One of these days I’ll be able to meet you and tell you face-to-face that you’re the only person in D.C. who represents me.  Sad state of affairs when there is only one, but that’s the way it is.

One week ends and another begins

To end the week:

So Obama says, regarding the Terminal Stupidity Administration’s porno scans and groping the genitals of men, women, and children,

“One of the most frustrating aspects of this fight against terrorism is that it has created a whole security apparatus around us that causes huge inconvenience for all of us.”

Ralph Lewis will be missed by many - updated

I got the call on Sunday evening from a fellow track and field official – Ralph Lewis had died in the hospital.  Only 2 days before, his condition was reported as “stable,”  I suppose in the way one is stable after falling off a cliff.

A week of ups and downs

So I’ll consider the week closed at this point.

Veterans Day was this past Thursday and the high point of the entire week occurred in only seconds. I didn’t go to a parade, and I was fortunately not at a graveside ceremony, but it was definitely the high spot on the calendar.

Veterans Day

If it’s the thought that counts, I hope this will do.

To all the brothers and sister veterans out there, happy Veterans Day.  Glad to know you and I are still around and are able to remember those who are not.  To most in this country you and I were wonderful to have around when there was trouble, but so easily ignored afterward.  Hopefully those who serve today will fare better with their return.

Do you drive? Know a youngster who will or does?

Received this via email this morning, I can see many of our modern day wimps and wussies crying it’s too hard for our precious children who are to be protected from all things real world, but if I had my way it would be mandatory viewing in every school every year, and I’ll bet it would do more good than the occasional wrecked car stuck out there on campus.

It’s been a good week

  • My second and third M1 Garands arrived in beautiful condition from CMP.  Now I have almost everything I need to have assembled three complete packages of truly historic significance.  I’ve wanted to do that for a long time but wasn’t able to afford to do so until recently.

Neither Predator Nor Prey

A book by Mark Spungin.  I ordered a copy and it arrived in the mail yesterday.

I opened it and took a quick look, intending to read it later, maybe in a day or two as I had other reading material not yet addressed.

And at 0317 this morning I finished it.

Just wondering…

Due to a perceived threat, paranoia, an overabundance of caution, or whatever, as there seems to be no definitive agreement on the reasons why, Japanese in the U.S. were interred during the war following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

So, following the attack on 9/11, why no similar effort?

It’s not my preferred kind of track and field, but it will do for the moment

One thing about track and field that’s a negative for me, other than the oppressive heat, is the fact that the season is so short.  In this area we don’t have much indoor activity, so that makes the season even shorter.

Passed the Technician’s exam

Well, it was an interesting morning.

After a fair amount of study, I went into Orlando this morning to take the Technician’s exam, the lowest licensing level for amateur radio.  There were more candidates there than I expected.

Swapping Field Rations

Bayou Renaissance Man has an interesting article here about some different countries’ field rations and he wonders how much swapping goes on amont those who use them.  Heh.  Reminds me of part of my time in Vietnam.

Based on BBB files, Premiere Electronics has a BBB Rating of F on a scale from A+ to F.

Reasons for this rating include:

Blogger PawPaw recently posted about a new ammo supplier, Steven Otterbacher, who has opened up an online site at BulkAmmo.com, so I figured I’d have a look.

In 1958, the Air Force had been an independent service for a decade, and during that time very much involved in Korea.  The Military Pay Act of 1958 added two pay grades to the top of the enlisted force structure:  E8 -Senor Master Sergeant, and E9 - Chief Master Sergeant.

Other than my AR-15’s, there are two rifles I’ve always wanted to own.  Well, “always” may be stretching it a bit, but I’d settle for “a long time,” I suppose.

Smoke Detectors in The Home

Print This Post

So, you have smoke detectors in your home and you’re as safe as you can be, correct?

Of course if you have smoke detectors you also have fire extinguishers of the proper type and in the proper locations, and you actually know how to use them, correct?

The Sewing Machine Project

I discovered a really neat idea last week, quite by accident. and for the handful of you who know of this blog, I offer it for your consideration.

With allowance for interpretations of verb tense, I think of the Chinese proverb “Give a man a fish and you have fed him for today.  Teach him to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.”

Flag pole project declared complete

Print This Post

Now I have a “real” flag pole.  The old one is no longer in place.  It was a sectional pole bought for around $100 at Sam’s Club.  Very lightweight, thin walled, it was good for the purpose intended if I wanted to be going out and taking the flag(s) down whenever a windy storm came by.  In other locations that might have been realistic, but here in Central Florida that’s a daily occurrence in the rainy season, so the inevitable happened.

HamCity.com — good place to do business!

I don’t know if I’ll stick with it or how deeply I’ll be involved, but with my back getting increasingly worse and not wanting to go through a 5th spine surgery, I’m thinking it might be wise to enable enjoying pursuits that do not require very much physical activity.  Between that and a bit of cash from an inheritance, a hell of a way to get money and I’d rather it not be so, I’ve decided to get back into ham radio.
