New Orleans, Days 4 and 5

Day 4, Thursday, Thanksgiving Day:

We had agreed to skip breakfast because Dot’s Diner was closed and we’d “leave room” for a relatively early reservation time at Smilie’s for lunch.  However, I called Mother twice and got no answer, so though I did not ask, I assume she went to breakfast in the dining room of the assisted living facility where she lives.

New Orleans, Day 3 update #1

I’d taken a sleeping pill earlier in the evening last night and had waited as late as I could to let them out for their evening constitutional.

0140 Tuesday morning.

Well, that was interesting.

I am probably persona non grata in the city when this gets out (heh, as if anybody actually reads this blog), but I fell asleep watching the Saints game last night, held in the Superdome right here in the city.  Don’t know why I was so tired, but I was.  And something I did, I shouldn’t have.

Good day for travel — airport not crowded and aircraft maybe 1/2 to 1/3 full.  TSA their usual deadpan, faceless automatron selves.  There must be a requirement that they have no personality.

Share the holidays - updated 11/22/08

Thanksgiving is almost upon us and Christmas is close behind.

Consider this.

I remember well that holiday or not, every card, letter, or package, no matter how brief or small, was a link with home when I could not be there.  Each was very much appreciated.

Listening to 50’s music may cause strange thoughts.

As I was on the way home from the range today I was listening to channel 5 of XM Radio.  That’s strictly music of the 50’s, when I was a kid.

Couldn’t help but wonder how many other people had ever called in to a radio station to request a DJ play a certain song.

I went to East Orange Shooting Sports this morning and I’m a very happy camper; screw the S’mores — I found something better.

Thoughts, observations, and expectations

  • Meager to begin with, I’m watching our IRA account dwindle as each day goes by.  It’s already dropped below the point where I’d not have to pay a maintenance fee.  Now the folks are billing me for “maintaining” an account that I never withdraw from.  I know it must be horribly expensive for them to “maintain” my account as they use my money.  It’s hard for me to have empathy and impossible for me to have sympathy for just about anyone in the financial industry.  Bandits in suits.

Europe’s version of federalism

…between 1999 and 2004, 84% of the legal acts in Germany stemmed from unelected EU institutions in Brussels, with only 16% coming from the German Parliament in Berlin.

Like Germany, Belgium is a EU member. In our parliament, we, too, are called upon almost every week to vote the incorporation into Belgian legislation of so-called “directives” emanating from the EU Commission…

It’s Babylon - but where’s the Whore?

Hey, it’s not my headline, it belongs to “Times Online.”

Those who can’t distinguish the difference between those who did their legal duty and made personal sacrifices, versus political decisions and policies by a duly constituted governement are as ignorant as those who riot and destroy businesses and personal property after sporting events.
