Beignets, boudin, and memories

I left at 0500 Wednesday morning for the airport, headed back to my roots, as I try to do every few months.  My trips of late have less frequent due to health, so this one was long overdue.  Jazz Fest was of no interest or intent, but it was to begin in two days at my destination.  There was not an empty seat to be had in the gate area or on the aircraft.

The flight arrived late (is there such a thing as an on-time arrival anymore?); I got the rental car, and headed off to pick up my mother.

You can’t HANDLE the truth!!!
[Col. Jessep (snarling Jack Nicholson) in A Few Good Men, 1992]

That’s the unsaid message our society has been sending our younger folks for a long time now and I believe both we and they are beginning to really pay for it.

What a shame it is that we have been demeaning our young folks for so long by telling them they are not able to do something and that they are so fragile that we will protect them from the truth, before we even give them the opportunity to try to handle it themselves.

Guns in college — the world will end!

Uh, well, maybe, but perhaps we should try it out before we reject the idea offhand.

Sounds really bad though, doesn’t it?  Yech.  All those guns, I mean everybody having a gun is just plain scary, isn’t it?

Tell you what — let’s get some foolhardy group to try it out.  Let’s see…hmm, how can we make it a decent proposition so someone might, just might want to give it a, uh, forgive me here, well, give it a shot.

When I began this blog last year I had no idea where it would go, but one thing I was sure of was I didn’t intend to get into “issues.”  There are far too many good writers out there who are knowledgeable and capable of organizing and expressing their opinions on a wide range of issues, so that is an area of blogging that doesn’t need me muddying up the waters.

Cold chills

Thanks to a link at Dry Roasted Blend regarding the cold war and the wearing of gas masks, and I’ve spent more than my share of time in them, I have been reminded rather chillingly of an unforgettable event in my life many years ago.  Many of our population have no real idea of those times now, and though I could well do without a reminder of that incident, it nevertheless jumped out at me as I innocently scrolled the page.

ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS

Having had one fairly severe adverse reaction to a medication during my childhood and only a few light ones in my adult life, I supppose I am fortunate, considering how many different prescribed and over the counter chemicals I have ingested.

However, others have not been so fortunate.  Given the complexities of the human organism and the number of ingested chemical combinations possible through both pharmaceuticals and normal everyday processed food, it is probably a miracle we don’t have more frequent problems.
